On 23 October 2013, the 12th European Economy Lecture was delivered by Professor Andrew HUGHES HALLETT of George Mason University, Arlington, Virginia (USA), and University of St. Andrews, Scotland. The title of his speech was: Is Independence Possible in an Interdependent World? Scotland vs. the UK's Participation in the European Economy”.

Professor HUGHES HALLETT has had a distinguished career and has written extensively on European integration. He is a member of the Scottish Council of Economic Advisors and more recently a member of the Fiscal Commission that was set up to study the possible effects of Scottish independence.

In the framework of the lecture, a paper has been released in the 'Bruges European Economic Policy briefings' series.
