On 22 October 2014, the 13th European Economy Lecture will be delivered by Professor Massimo MOTTA , Chief Economist, DG Competition, European Commission. The title of his speech is: New Challenges for Competition Policy in Europe”.

A strong internal market with vigorous competition is necessary for the growth of the European Union and its Member States. One of the first casualties of the financial crisis was fair competition. However, the European Commission acted immediately to protect the internal market from discriminatory measures and distorting subsidies. Effective enforcement of competition rules prevented new barriers to trade and investment. Although the EU’s competition policy has attacked successfully this kind of barriers, it increasingly has to deal with new challenges from ever evolving technologies. Technological innovations offer new opportunities and new products but may also require new corporate alliances and may create new hubs of dominance. Some of the new alliances and products raise consumer welfare, some others harm it. It is increasingly difficult for competition policy to identify harmful corporate practices in the constantly changing economic landscape.

Professor Massimo MOTTA will deliver the 13th Annual European Economy Lecture addressing New Challenges for Competition Policy in Europe and how to ensure that vigorous competition provides sound foundations for a strong Europe. His lecture will take place at 19:00, Room E, on 22 October 2014.

Everyone is welcome but registration is required.
