On Wednesday, 27 January 2021, we had the pleasure to host the Natolin Academy of Migration Roundtable titled: The New Strategy of the European Union on 'forced returns'.

The event covered the recent proposal by the European Commission of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, focusing on the issue of "forced return", namely the expulsion of a foreign person who does not or no longer has the right to stay in the territory of the European Union. Our guests will discuss the reasons behind the establishment of a new strategy targeting this specific policy and evaluate the effectiveness of both past and current practices.

On these timely issues, we had the opportunity to hear the critical analyses of our guests:

  • Mrs Amal AL OUASSIF, Researcher, Policy Center for the New South, Rabat, Morocco;
  • Prof. Ahmet İÇDUYGU, Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey;
  • Prof. Florian TRAUNER, Institute for European Studies, Vrije Universiteit, Brussels, Belgium, and College of Europe in Natolin, Poland;
  • Mr Francisco Mauro GAGLIARDI, Deputy Head of the Irregular Migration and Return Policy Unit, European Commission, Brussels, Belgium;
